THINK Together Kids
Our Story

Our Story

Every great story has a fascinating beginning, a middle that pulls you into the unfolding drama, and an ending that leaves you satisfied. It becomes a story you want your friends to experience. A story that inspires you or sparks your imagination.
THINK Together is a great story.
We begin in the early 90s. In a tough neighborhood in westside Costa Mesa, a group of incredible mothers decided they’d had enough. Gangs and drugs and prostitution had created an unsafe environment for their kids so they reached out for help. Community leaders came together to open the doors of Shalimar Learning Center, a space for the neighborhood kids to come after school, get help with their homework, and stay safe. Over 100 kids showed up on the first day.
From those beginnings at Shalimar, THINK Together was founded as a non-profit in 1997 to expand educational support services for under-resourced kids like the ones at Shalimar. THINK Together developed partnerships with school districts in the major urban areas of California to provide these services at school sites. Programs are designed to help kids with language and math skills, provide STEM instruction, and arts and healthy living activities, all of which reinforce and build on the instruction students receive during the school day. THINK Together’s affiliate Principal’s Exchange works with teachers and administrators in schools with high populations of historically struggling students to create sustainable instruction strategies and provide development opportunities to teachers.
Within this great story are a lot of amazing smaller stories. Families talk about THINK Together as a partner in their kids’ education. Students thrive on the support they’re receiving and embrace more opportunities in school and in life. School administrators and teachers appreciate the shared effort toward helping students succeed.
And the ending of this story? Nowhere in sight. We’ve got too much great work left to do to create opportunities for all our kids. Together. Let’s THINK Together.
